This May 1st, Labor Day, the museum will be open with its regular hours, from 8.15am to 6.50pm (last entrance at 6.20pm). Regular entrance to be paid on this day.

On Sunday, as the first Sunday of the month, the museum will be free entrance to all. You cannot book tickets for that day, so you will need to queue in line and wait to get in.

In addition to admiring Michelangelo’s David, make sure to study the unfinished sculptures called “the Prisoners” in the hall leading up the David, also by Michelangelo. Before you get that far, head right as you enter the museum and make a stop at the Museum of Musical Instruments, where you can see early versions of the piano and some of the last Stradivari violins left in the world, as well as other instruments from the Medici and Lorraine collections.

After the David, make a stop and go around the room with gesso preparatory works by Lorenzo Bartolini and Luigi Pampaloni. Here you can admire the works before they were carved into marble and which you might see on location elsewhere in Florence. There are many of their works spread out over the city.

Many are taking advantage of May 1st being on a Thursday to take a four day weekend, so expect the museum to be busy. Check to see if you can book tickets ahead online or by phone at 055.294.883. If you can’t find availability, you will need to queue in line to get in.
